Sarah Ellison / Washington Post: Top Fox News managers depart amid Murdoch's concerns over controversial Arizona election night projection
Sarah Ellison / @sarahellison: BREAKING —> Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt was laid off today alongside just under 20 Fox News staffers. Stirewalt sat on the Fox News decision desk, which has come under fire for its early call on Arizona election night. Story forthcoming...
Matthew Gertz / @mattgertz: Chris Stirewalt was laid off because Fox's decision desk accurately called the race for Trump, while Maria Bartiromo may get promoted for her conspiracy theories about the election being stolen. This is what Fox News is and aspires to be: A propaganda machine.

@slpng_giants: Keep in mind that Fox's “hard news” division is how they're able to convince advertisers, many of whom have ditched the racist and conspiratorial opinion shows, to stay with the network. That cover is almost gone now. Without it, they're basically Breitbart with carriage fees. https://twitter.com/...

Craig Silverman / @craigsilverman: At most news orgs, a person who helped make a big and accurate early call, stuck to it based on data, and was proven right would be celebrated. At Fox News, he gets laid off. https://twitter.com/...
@grudging1: Fox is going to give Newsmax and OAN all the crazy competition they can handle. Rupert may be the most destructive individual in US history. https://twitter.com/...

Angelo Carusone / @goangelo: We know direction Fox is going. They're like a meteor approaching. Heating up. They'll be worse than ever. It will make their business implode if we act. Open question remains: will it burn up and break apart or will it crash and cause massive damage. We decide by what we do. https://twitter.com/...

Parker Molloy / @parkermolloy: I know that some people had a bit of optimism that Fox would shift to more news/less crazy conspiracy theory stuff after the election... I hate to say I told you so... https://twitter.com/...
Jay Rosen / @jayrosen_nyu: Fox said Biden would win Arizona. Biden did win Arizona. Which created a crisis at Fox. Now, heads have rolled. This would never happen at a reality-based newsroom. https://twitter.com/...
Dan Pfeiffer / @danpfeiffer: After helping incite a violent insurrection that killed several people, the Murdoch family is doubling down on dangerous propaganda. Once again, congrats to all of the “journalists” at Fox that whitewash this dangerous behavior. https://twitter.com/...

The call was correct, the information conveyed to viewers accurate and early, and people got mad so he's displeased https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...
Tim Alberta / @timalberta: Stirewalt is the man. One of the smartest people in political journalism. A huge (and dumbfounding) loss for Fox News. https://twitter.com/...
Jonathan V. Last / @jvlast: This is Fox's only possible path: They have to cut the OAN/Newsmax insurgency off at the knees. And to do that, they have to go harder MAGA. Anyone who thought Fox would become more responsible was delusional. Now: What do you think that means for the future of the GOP? https://twitter.com/...
Noah Rothman / @noahcrothman: They were first. They were right. And they're being punished for it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

Mark Jacob / @markjacob16: Fox's Maria Bartiromo, promoter of the Big Lie that led to the deadly Capitol attack, remains on the board of trustees at @nyuniversity. Why would a major U.S. university like NYU want to trash its reputation by keeping Bartiromo on the board? https://twitter.com/...
Joshua Benton / @jbenton: “A news staffer tells me: ‘[In all seriousness, I work at Fox News, none of this should be surprising, and the fact that I consider this “disheartening” suggests that I had irrational expectations for this proven lie machine].’” https://twitter.com/...
@slpng_giants: Unbelievable. Almost no one on this horrendous network has pushed out more disinformation than Maria Bartiromo. And than is saying something. https://twitter.com/...
Parker Molloy / @parkermolloy: It's been clear since the election that Fox's strategy was going to be to move more to the hard right. Just yesterday it came out that Maria Bartiromo would be doing a trial run for a primetime Fox show. Today, she floated an unhinged conspiracy theory. https://www.mediamatters.org/ ...
@mmfa: Obviously, this claim about the storming of the Capitol on January 6 is completely bonkers. But while Bartiromo has been pushing deranged conspiracy theories, she's now among the people being given a chance to host Fox's new primetime show. https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

@axios: Exclusive: Forbes is launching a newsletter platform that will allow journalists to launch their own paid newsletters and split the revenue with the publisher. It will hire 20-30 writers with big followings to get the platform up and running. https://www.axios.com/...
Jon Levine / @levinejonathan: If I'm a writer with a large following and want to start a paid newsletter, I see very little reason to share my profits with Forbes rather than just start a substack https://www.axios.com/...
@jarroddicker: Forbes launches “Substack as Brand”: - built in distribution - hire/advance star talent - 50/50 revenue split on subscriptions creator/brand - ad revenue based on PVs - THIS IS BIG: all revenue guarantees salary minimum, benefits, legal, creator support https://www.axios.com/... https://twitter.com/...
Forbes: Forbes Introduces ‘Journalist Entrepreneurs’ Program, Allowing Writers To Build Enduring Businesses Around Deeply Engaged Audiences
Randall Lane / @randalllane: The @Forbes program also takes care of pretty much everything except the journalism. Marketing, fulfillment, tech, customer service, billing, etc. Most great reporters aren't marketers/GMs/IT experts. We want to empower them to do what they do best - we'll take care of the rest.
Rahul Sanghi / @rahulsanghi1: Wow this is big! Tangible recognition of the changing relationship between publishers and journalists from employer/employee to co-creators. Genuine bell-weather moment for the creator economy https://twitter.com/...
Josh Young / @jny: The Forbes brand will be valuable, and they will offer bundles or other packages that capture brand value, or this will fail If Forbes gets traction, it will interesting how Substack reacts I imagine they are hungry to capture positive externalities among isolated newsletters https://twitter.com/...
David Dorsey / @davidadorsey: @jarroddicker 50/50 split favors Forbes. This is for sharks, not minnows.
Sam DeBrule / @samdebrule: @jarroddicker Wild! But who will own the audience?
Jay Rosen / @jayrosen_nyu: Forbes is launching a newsletter platform that will let journalists launch their own paid newsletters and split the revenue with Forbes. Writers who are chosen get a salary, an editor and legal, etc. It's for “people who already have a big following.” https://www.axios.com/...
Randall Lane / @randalllane: Speaking of marketing, as one of the world's biggest web sites, with well over 100M monthly users, we can contextually put our journalists' newsletter offerings in front of the people most likely to subscribe. Audience development at scale.
Alastair Coote / @_alastair: Cynical take: one of the reasons I think email newsletters are so successful is that reading an article on the web is usually an incredibly painful experience. One of the worst offenders: Forbes https://twitter.com/...
@jarroddicker: @avibenhutta it's interesting, Forbes as an editorial brand is ... BUT, it's built a business on contributor networks & it works (revenue + traffic). this is contributor network 2.0 & giving A LOT to writers; all the benefits of a media company + financial upside. idk who owns the content tho
Caroline Howard / @carolinelhoward: Excited to share: @Forbes is opening our platform to journalist entrepreneurs who want to publish their own premium paid newsletters. ‘very appealing for writers looking for more autonomy and compensation in line with their audience and performance.’ 👇🏽https://www.axios.com / ...
Mark Stenberg / @markstenberg3: the hub-and-spoke model of newsletter management is becoming very popular, very quickly! this joins @tinynewsco and @6amcity in adopting a model that gives independent writers the support and resources of a larger organization, for a cut of the money https://twitter.com/...
Hanaa' Tameez / @hanaatameez: “It will be less appealing for writers with controversial political opinions or those looking for no editorial or brand oversight, like Glenn Greenwald, who recently joined Substack.” Via @sarafischer: https://www.axios.com/...
Randall Lane / @randalllane: Best of all, @Forbes gets to hire lots and lots of great, expert journalists, and set them up to make uncapped money while remaining an integral, integrated part of a global newsroom. Know anyone who fits the bill? Send them our way! (end)
Taylor Lorenz / @taylorlorenz: We are undeniably in a newsletter bubble, but writers getting more of a financial stake in the success of the projects they work on and audiences they build is a good thing https://twitter.com/...
Sar Haribhakti / @sarthakgh: “Writers will be able to split subscription revenue for the newsletters 50/50 with Forbes. They will also be able to receive a cut of advertising revenue with Forbes, with no cap on potential earnings.” Savvy spot to be in the spectrum of totally indie and a full time staffer https://twitter.com/...
Simon Owens / @simonowens: This seems like a big deal. It's the first mainstream media company that I know of that will actually partner with writers (i.e., giving them a cut of revenue) to launch newsletters. https://www.axios.com/...

Jack Marshall / @jackmarshall: some possible reasons: salary, healthcare, vacation, legal support, accounting, editing, strategic advice, customer service, marketing, growth tactics, brand affiliation... https://twitter.com/...
Randall Lane / @randalllane: We also offer these @Forbes Journalist Entrepreneurs multiple revenue streams beyond their salary - not just newsletters, but also for $ writing for Forbes (which also happens to be the best way to marketing a newsletter - win win).

Dave Lee / @daveleeft: This really undermines my “journalists don't care about the business model” argument for neutral reporting https://twitter.com/...
Benedict Evans / @benedictevans: I am somewhat skeptical that people with big audiences will give Substack 10% indefinitely, but Forbes wants 50%. They'll have to give a great deal of upside to your audience to justify that, IMO. https://www.axios.com/...
Dieter Bohn / @backlon: Forbes' latest newsletter platform release has a nasty surprise. https://twitter.com/...
Alex Konrad / @alexrkonrad: We are launching a new kind of newsletter model at @Forbes, with the goal of supporting more high-quality journalism! Nick Brackney / @nickbrackney: Finally a gig economy solution that actually seems balanced. I wonder what this will do to the tech writing community. I've found it harder and harder to get the same volume and quality articles I used to in this space. https://www.axios.com/...
Ryan McCarthy / @mccarthyryanj: Forbes wants to take 50% of your newsletter subscription revenue. (It'll still serve ads to your subscribers; you'll get a cut of that) Substack takes 10%. No ads. What's the right % of revenue to give to your newsletter software provider / platform? https://www.axios.com/...

Wagatwe Wanjuki / @wagatwe: Connecting pay to page views in any way makes me nervous. That means people who cater to whiteness will be rewarded the most. https://www.axios.com/...
Randall Lane / @randalllane: First, the core Journalist Entrepreneurs are Forbes STAFFERS. They'll get salary, benefits, legal support, editorial guidance/editing/fact-checking, if needed. But they also get uncapped upside courtesy of 50/50 subscription revenue split. Best of both worlds.

Discussion:
@latimes: Streaming platforms like HBO Max and Disney+ are struggling with a phenomenon known as “churn” Our pal @RFaughnder explains. https://www.latimes.com/...
Michele Morrow / @michelemorrow: @HandsomeWarudo We need to go back to multichannel (or now multi service) bundles, someway, somehow.
@film_girl: Netflix has attempted to conquer churn just by releasing an endless supply of content, apropos of quality, in the hopes that you'd stick around until the flagship series returned the next year.
@film_girl: What arguably makes churn worse is the “release at once” phenomenon, pioneered by Netflix (even though many shows are still written/produced so they don't have to be binge-watched), which lets someone suck in a whole series in a weekend and then cancel.
Stephen Ford / @stephenseanford: We need movie theaters. https://twitter.com/...
@jenosontwit: -Too goddamn many of them, we cut the cable to avoid this shit and now...*hand waves* -Things were better when it was JUST Netflix/Hulu -Too many apps not offering much of anything -Old shows/movies are not as ‘bingeable’ as alot of these companies say or we thought. https://twitter.com/...
@sweetpavement: Aside I don't have time for right now, but one thing that's contributing to my “churn” rate is lack of discoverability. Show me the deep bench of your catalogue with better recommendations, rather than forcing me into your “new” stuff every time I load the app. https://twitter.com/...
Sam Barlow / @mrsambarlow: @awintory TBH I feel like the inertia of not cancelling is currently in their favor. Yes it's harder to cancel than it was with cable, but it's also easier to sign up (and then forget)
Matthew Miller / @matthewmspace: How fast do you cancel streaming services? Hollywood dilemma - Los Angeles Times I think the only one insulated from this is Amazon. Since it's bundled with the rest of Prime, you're probably never going to cancel unless you don't buy from Amazon anymore. https://www.latimes.com/...
Elizabeth Sanders Lafleur / @eslafleur: We pick up and cancel streaming subscriptions all the time. Netflix is the only streaming service I've had without pause (since 2011). https://www.latimes.com/...
@film_girl: But the best way to avoid churn is simply to have better programming. That's what HBO nailed in the late 90s/aughts. But churn was built into the cable model, whereas it hasn't been in pure OTT subs.
Sam Barlow / @mrsambarlow: Welcome to digital, TV! A least you don't have to deal with frictionless refunds! :) https://twitter.com/...
Michele Morrow / @michelemorrow: How many times will this lesson be learned? MCN's and anyone in digital content (prior to the big companies cashing in) figured this out awhile ago. Having exclusive content alone won't keep viewers paying up. https://twitter.com/...
Sam Sharma / @s3rioussam: Anyone who's worked on live or online games could've told you to solve for churn before you did anything, Hollywood. If you're just discovering churn, I'm... flummoxed as to what to say really. https://twitter.com/...
@katchoo1: Uh oh. Long term contracts are coming — either cancellation penalties or (to do it with carrot instead of stick) a lower rate if you agree to sign up for a year or pay for a year at a time. Eventually we'll be back to where we were with cable... https://www.latimes.com/...
Jake Williams / @malwarejake: Literally everyone saw this coming. Beyond a certain point, streaming service subscriptions are a zero sum game. I'm not adding another without cancelling one I already have. Sure, I'll be back when you release the new season of series X, but only for a month... https://twitter.com/...
Bradley Chambers / @bradleychambers: @film_girl For me, a lot of it comes down to time. I've never had less time to watch stuff, but never had more awesome stuff to watch. That is why I love Podcasts and Audiobooks - I can listen while driving, cleaning house, etc.
@film_girl: Ironically, a pre-AT&T HBO, managed churn via HBO Go/Now, which in essence gave up home video revenue to offset churn/compete with other OTT content. The pandemic will be a problem because it created bottlenecks in the amount of new content that will be available.
Lisa Nicole Bell / @lisanicolebell: The problem isn't competition. It's UX + discovery. The harder the viewer has to work to find things, the faster they cancel. Streaming requires more analytical viewer-centered thinking than linear TV. Gotta bring in folks who understand the intersection of UX, content, and data. https://twitter.com/...
