@tinynewsco: Today we're proud to announce a new effort to make the path to journalism entrepreneurship easier: The Tiny News Collective, a new partnership between @NewsCatalyst and @LIONPubs https://tinynewsco.org/
Heather Bryant / News Catalyst: Introducing The Tiny News Collective
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: The challenge I was given was this: Can you build a complete news publishing stack for less than $100 a month? @jacqui and I got to work and found that yes, yes you can.
Mandy Jenkins / @mjenkins: I'm so excited about this announcement from @tinynewsco! I know how difficult it can be to start a new news site, this effort will make it more attainable in giving tangible support to founders where they need it most. https://medium.com/...
Lenfest Institute / @lenfestinst: . @NewsCatalyst and @LIONPubs today announced The Tiny News Collective, a new partnership providing the tools, resources and commonwealth of knowledge to help people build sustainable news organizations that reflect and serve their communities. https://medium.com/...
Aron Pilhofer / @pilhofer: This is a project very near and dear to my heart. I could not be prouder to be part of the amazing group of people behind it. https://medium.com/... Wanna change local news for the better? Join us. Sign up here, and/or nominate someone. https://tinynewsco.org/
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: We'll support newsletters through @mailchimp. Local ads through @WhereByUs. Comments from @coralproject. A full fundraising/accounting suite from @MonkeyPod_io. Analytics configured based on @brianboyer's Memberkit. It's a platform focused on the *business* of local news.
@tinynewsco: Part classroom, part incubator, part platform, The Tiny News Collective is designed to give founders literally everything they need to launch and build a thriving local news business, including training, tools and access to resources like legal counsel.
@tinynewsco: The vast majority of news startups don't launch with deep-pocketed investors and splashy coverage in industry press. Most are launched by one or two founders passionate about news and information and motivated to serve their communities, but with no support and limited resources.
Mathew Ingram / @mathewi: This is a great effort that I am happy to see come to fruition, and I wish them much success — well done, @pilhofer and @anikaanand00 and @HBCompass and the rest of the Tiny News team https://rsci.app.link/...
@pennyriordan1: Ten years ago the savior of hyperlocal journalism was Patch. In 2021 it may be the Tiny News Collective, with a few improvements: Shared tech stack but not cookie cutter, fiscal sponsorship, individual applications, and smart people in charge: https://medium.com/...
Jacqui Lough / @jacqui: It feels so good to go public with what we've been working diligently on this year 🙌 https://twitter.com/...
LION Publishers / @lionpubs: “The biggest barrier to starting a newsroom is the cost. By reducing those costs, it will be easier for people underrepresented in the journalism industry to start their own newsroom.” https://twitter.com/...
Stefanie Murray / @stefaniemurray: WOW ... ambitious, impressive and likely to make a very positive impact across the U.S.! https://twitter.com/...
Heather Bryant / @hbcompass: Everything that @tylrfishr and @jacqui have built this year has just been amazing to watch as it came together. @tinynewsco solves the challenge that all news founders face in the beginning: picking the right technology. This team has built an incredible platform. https://twitter.com/...
Heather Bryant / @hbcompass: This is the work that has been the meaningful bright spot in the bleakness of this year. The Tiny News Collective is real opportunity to change what ownership of media looks like and support people left out of traditional support systems in journalism. https://twitter.com/...
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: Both @pilhofer and @thesmallpicture talked about the need for something like this, so we can have more @kensingtonvoice-likes in the world. And @LIONPubs has been leading the charge on training for local independent news. The partnership made too much sense, so we got to work.
Ashley Woods Branch / @ash_detroit: The road to becoming a journalist founder just got paved. And there are streetlights. This is a GAME-CHANGER in the fight to grow an independent local news ecosystem, to build civic convos at the town and city level, to rebuild trust between news and neighbors. You can do it! https://twitter.com/...
@newscatalyst: The Tiny News Collective is a game changer in breaking down the barriers to founding a local newsroom. We're proud to be doing this work in partnership with @LIONPubs and our wildly talented board and advisors. https://twitter.com/...
Megan Garvey / @garveymcvg: Very important starting point: “The Collective isn't trying to ‘save’ local journalism as we know it. We are empowering people to build something new and better: a true, ground-up ecosystem of diverse, locally focused newsrooms that are from and for local communities.” https://twitter.com/...
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: We do so by relying on free/extremely cheap tools. Publishing works like this: Google Doc => GraphQL @webiny API => MongoDB <= GraphQL @webiny API <= Next.js static site. This costs next-to-nothing. That frees us up to pay a bit for some best-in-class business tools.
Jeff Jarvis / @jeffjarvis: Tiny News is big news. Congratulations to @pilhofer, @ckrewson, and teams and partners for making this happen. https://twitter.com/...
@tinynewsco: We're working toward bringing the first founders on board in early 2021. We invite interested founders to sign up and if you know someone who you think would be an excellent fit, you can nominate them and we'll reach out to them with more information. https://tinynewsco.org/
Jim Friedlich / @jimfriedlich: Welcome to the world TINY NEWS COLLECTIVE! Very pleased that @knightfdn and @lenfestinst are co-funding this important new platform for news start-ups. Delighted to partner with @pilhofer @acnatta @LIONPubs @ckrewson @TUKleincollege @NewsCatalyst @jroxann @LaSharah and more. https://twitter.com/...

@rmac18: Facebook is having an end-of-year, company-wide meeting right now. One of its executives tried to rally employees by telling them: “We're at the center of what it means to be human.”
@rmac18: News folks are not going to love this. Some product manager announced internally a tool that FB is developing called “TL;DR”. Basically, it will use AI to summarize long form articles and spit out bullet points so people don't have to read the full piece. What could go wrong!
@rmac18: FB's TL;DR will apparently also be offering audio narration of full articles and a voice assistant to ask contextual questions about a piece. For example, you could ask “Hey Facebook, how many people will this vaccine help” and it supposedly would spit out an answer.
@jamespmcleod: It's like they're *trying* to convince every other country to go with the Australian model. https://twitter.com/...
Amy MacPherson / @msamymacpherson: From #Facebook's end-of-year meeting today, where Stephen Harper's former advisor Rachel Curran now sits on the executive #IDU Gloves will come off if they attempt to erase #PressFreedom & those of us who publish substantive longform investigative journalism #CDNpoli #CDNmedia https://twitter.com/...
Eric Umansky / @ericuman: I'm gonna introduce this product manager to @pamelacolloff. https://twitter.com/...
Austin Kocher, PhD / @ackocher: Let's get this straight: an intern inputs a topic sentence, GPT-3 uses artificial intelligence to write the news article, a Google algorithm prioritizes top articles, then a FB tool summarizes the article so no one has to read it. Welcome to the digital hellscape of neoliberalism https://twitter.com/...
Moh / @lessismoh: Crazy idea but if you're gonna make it easier for people not to click on articles and react without visiting the website, maybe you should compensate the news outlets you're summarizing! Or you could just not do this because people already react without clicking on FB https://twitter.com/...
Ryan Robinson / @ryan_lr: Right. The solution to the problems of social media is definitely to make it less likely people will bother to read the articles they share. /s https://twitter.com/...
Eileen Clancy / @clancynewyork: A whole thread of suck about Facebook's future products-all stuff we don't need and they actually can't accomplish in a useful or safe way. https://twitter.com/...
Eric Lach / @ericlach: The AI: “I have learned every fact in existence and can solve any problem you put to me. What is thy bidding?” Humans: “Will you read GQ for us?” https://twitter.com/...
@jamespmcleod: Been thinking about this for a minute, and I literally cannot think of a more parasitic thing Facebook could do to journalism. I'd be shocked if this ever gets completed. The fact that they're even working on it is astonishing. https://twitter.com/...
Elizabeth Lopatto / @mslopatto: I can't wait to see if AI can parse my tone https://twitter.com/...
Dale Russell / @dalerussellfox5: Are they going to call it #USAToday? #justkidding https://twitter.com/...
Dara Lind / @dlind: Among the MANY MANY MANY problems with this is the following: there are few widely-read “longform” articles that are read for discrete “takeaways” anyway. The exception is big investigations, which OUTLETS HAVE ALREADY STARTED AGGREGATING THEMSELVES (cf NYT on Trump taxes) https://twitter.com/...
Ryan Deto / @ryandeto: Facebook to the news industry https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
Dan Hon / @hondanhon: Excited to hear how this performs as dogfood against Mark and other leadership internal posts first https://twitter.com/...
Ben Dreyfuss / @bendreyfuss: I imagine Facebook will fuck this up but in theory isn't this just a bit like Google's answers to when the super bowl is? And stuff? https://twitter.com/...
Brooke Binkowski / @brooklynmarie: Scooping up money generated by journalism, squeezing out specific news orgs with algorithms, doling out small payouts to newsrooms that are just large enough to keep everyone scared of pissing them off, and now using AI to steal our shit? @Facebook is no friend to #1A! https://twitter.com/...
Brianna Wu / @briannawu: Good news everyone! Now instead of people getting news from journalists, they will get it from Facebook's AI which will summarize the journalists. This is going to work out AMAZINGLY well! https://twitter.com/...
@vogon: developing a state-of-the-art AI summarization system (nb: “state-of-the-art” for text summarization right now is apparently about 30-40% word overlap with a reference summary) sounds both way cheaper and way more effective than the small team of human workers who used to do this https://twitter.com/...
John Zhu / @jzheel: Apparently Facebook didn't notice news publishers suing Google for displaying headlines and 100-character excerpts while POINTING PEOPLE TO THE STORIES. https://twitter.com/...
Mike Conley / @mike_conley: Cripes, this thread. This meeting sounds bonkers. https://twitter.com/...
Kaitlyn Greenidge / @surlybassey: welp being a writer was fun not sure what the next step is if this is what's coming 🙃 https://twitter.com/...

Megan K. Stack / @megankstack: Is Facebook paying people to come up with ... headlines and subheds? https://twitter.com/...
John Peretti / @johnperetti: And they stole it from reddit! I wonder if Alexis and/or Steve had the foresight to trademark it https://twitter.com/...
Dave Hoffman / @hoffprof: This is going to vastly improve my knowledge of the recent literature concerning constitutional interpretation. https://twitter.com/...
@consultingcso: I thought people already only read the title of a couple poorly researched pseudo-articles, assumed the remaining contents, and then proclaimed themselves experts; qualified to argue with those spending 50+ years researching just that specific tiny specialization? https://twitter.com/...
Michael Gendron / @michaelgendron: We're all going to kvetch about this as being horrible, worst.thing.ever., end of Western civilization, etc, and then everyone will use it and love it. https://twitter.com/...
@thesupermikey: There is a @reddit bot that does this on some high volume boards for specific news sites. It does a good enough job. I'm sure fb's bullshit will be marginally better. https://twitter.com/...
Brandon Wall / @walldo: This sounds exactly like the community reddit bot that has been around for years https://twitter.com/...
Samit Sarkar / @samitsarkar: so ... it's Axios? https://twitter.com/...
Kevin Roose / @kevinroose: It's been less than a year since Facebook's AI accidentally translated Xi Jinping's name as “Mr. Shithole,” so I'm gonna take the under on this one ever shipping. https://twitter.com/...
Daniel Walters / @danielwinlander: They already had this, it was called “Huffington Post” https://twitter.com/...
James Meese / @meese_james: Facebook has tried desperately to separate itself from news distribution since ~2018 but can still engage with journalism in the most ham-fisted way. https://twitter.com/...
Carl Natale / @carlnatale: I've always said one of these days, Facebook is going to kill us. Not murder, but more like vehicular homicide. “TL;DR” is the car & newspapers will be roadkill. https://twitter.com/...
@korlis: “News folks are not going to love this” grossly understates the potential danger of Facebook's algorithm reframing actual reporting https://twitter.com/...
Sean Hecht / @seanhecht: This is terrible. OTOH don't Axios and The Hill pretty much do this already? https://twitter.com/...
@josh_posts: This isn't too hard, Reddit has a bot that does this very well already. https://twitter.com/...
Grace Clarke / @graceclarke: I'm not saying The Daily Mail or BI are better for it. And perhaps there's a correlation between this tactic, audience size, and quality of audience. But the bulleted list summaries work and I read them. I very much said what I said. https://twitter.com/...
Craig Welch / @craigawelch: Waiting for Facebook to build a tool that showers news producers with the $ necessary to inform the citizenry. It would compensate content producers for the money it makes selling ads when people share news. You could call it: Facebook. https://twitter.com/...
Sonia Weiser / @weischoice: but where is this for meetings? https://twitter.com/...
Chuck Sudo / @bportseasoning: Facebook should call this longread AI platform “OK Boomer.” https://twitter.com/...

@rmac18: CTO Schroepfer commends the company's AI technology. He talks of a principle called “self-supervision” or a way for AI to train itself to detect hate speech and misinfo. Fergus Hunter / @fergushunter: Agree with this. I question parts of the critique (and their application in Aus) but it's a valid contribution and journos should consider. What I find tedious is the reflexive, absurdly certain, hyperbolic views in support. The piece was deliberately provocative, which is good. https://twitter.com/...
Tiger Webb / @tfswebb: on that nieman lab piece: journalism should be able to entertain even fundamental critiques! any inability to do so is, at best, hypocrisy
Mark Jacob / @markjacob16: As someone who once ran a local news staff that wrote a lot about crime, I found this article thought-provoking. I'm proud of what we wrote about police accountability. And I don't agree that “the crime beat needs to go.” But it does need re-examination. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Sarah Weinman / @sarahw: All of this, yes. https://www.niemanlab.org/...

Nicholas Nehamas / @nicknehamas: “Let's be honest: Crime coverage is terrible. It's racist, classist, fear-based clickbait masking as journalism.” https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Wesley / @wesleylowery: provocative and smart piece about the failures of how media covers police and the criminal justice system. “The whole process of how the criminal-legal system is covered needs to be reexamined.” Industrywide examination is long overdue https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Griswold Family Vacation / @hashtaggriswold: This is a great idea if you want to expediate the death of local news https://twitter.com/...
Rob Bellinger / @rob_bellinger: These findings are true everywhere, and they also explain the mindless repetition of victim-blaming narratives when pedestrians and cyclists are killed on the street. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Matt Bevan / @matthewbevan: Crime reporting is generally uninteresting to me as a news consumer unless it shows evidence of an unaddressed problem (DV), an increasing problem (DV, hate crime, terrorism), or a systemic issue (corruption, police malpractice, DV). https://twitter.com/...
@niemanlab: “While crime coverage fails to serve the public, it does serve three powerful constituencies: white supremacy, law enforcement, and a newsroom's bottom line.” @TauhidChappell and @RispoliMike on overhauling crime coverage: https://www.niemanlab.org/... #Predix2021
Chris Speckhard / @chrisspeckhard: Fair point: “The media's overemphasis on crime makes people feel less safe than they really are and negatively shapes public policy around the criminal-legal system.” https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Marisa Twigg / @marisatwigg: “Let's be honest: Crime coverage is terrible. Alexander / @alexanderrusso: Some thought-provoking ideas, no matter what beat you cover. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Zaid Jilani / @zaidjilani: A lot of crime reporting is indeed really bad, clickbaity, sensationalist, etc. I think many people would like nothing more, however, than to see even less coverage of the violence too many poor people face on a daily basis, so they can ignore it. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Marisa Twigg / @marisatwigg: “That's b/c police give journalists info fast + cultivate relationships with reporters through ride-alongs and press conferences. Police do all of this to control the narrative, set the news agenda, and stoke public fear so that law-enforcement budgets keep going up.” READ THIS.
@cameronwilson: This x1000. I was always baboozled when a crime story leads an ABC radio bulletin, it makes no sense other than the ‘if it bleeds it leads’ https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Mary Wisniewski / @marywizchicago: An interesting take — there are many compassionate crime reporters, but the “if it bleeds, it leads” approach of some newsrooms is a problem. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Heather Bryant / @hbcompass: I'm breaking my own rule this year about only engaging with predictions and end of year think pieces from people I don't already know to share this one. Crime coverage has long, long been vastly more harmful and rarely if ever useful to communities. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Zuri Berry / @zuriberry: There are so many good points here. The headline is trash, but let's just say we all need to reimagine how we cover crime so that police narratives are deemphasized and people who DO NOT hold power are centered. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Sam Tranum / @samtranum: Wow, okay, this is an idea I'd never considered. This column makes an argument that crime reporting by news organisations does more harm than good, and should be abolished. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Regs / @r3gulations: @mediagazer Nah, I actually need to know if someone was mugged or carjacked in my neighborhood.

Gregg Carlstrom / @glcarlstrom: Congratulations to Egypt, which clawed back its undisputed spot as the world's third-worst jailer of journalists, bumping Saudi Arabia down to fourth. It was one of two countries where a journalist died from covid-19 contracted in custody. https://cpj.org/...
