@rmac18: Facebook is having an end-of-year, company-wide meeting right now. One of its executives tried to rally employees by telling them: “We're at the center of what it means to be human.”
@rmac18: News folks are not going to love this. Some product manager announced internally a tool that FB is developing called “TL;DR”. Basically, it will use AI to summarize long form articles and spit out bullet points so people don't have to read the full piece. What could go wrong!
@rmac18: FB's TL;DR will apparently also be offering audio narration of full articles and a voice assistant to ask contextual questions about a piece. For example, you could ask “Hey Facebook, how many people will this vaccine help” and it supposedly would spit out an answer.
Isobel Asher Hamilton / Business Insider: Facebook is reportedly building a tool called ‘TLDR’ that will read and summarize news articles for you
Aroon Deep / Medianama: Facebook to introduce AI-based article summary feature called TLDR soon: Report
Ben Walsh / @bendwalsh: Absurd. Tech people should treat “longreads” with the respect they are traditionally afforded by praisefully tweeting them43 seconds after they are published and then opening them in a new tab whete they will sit unread for weeks https://twitter.com/...
Tom Scocca / @tomscocca: Your core product was supposed to be a place to hang out and connect with friends but you built it into a brain-poison dispenser that estranges people from family and occasionally causes genocide, but sure, you're going to teach an AI to effectively summarize a piece of writing
Moh / @lessismoh: Crazy idea but if you're gonna make it easier for people not to click on articles and react without visiting the website, maybe you should compensate the news outlets you're summarizing! Or you could just not do this because people already react without clicking on FB https://twitter.com/...

John Zhu / @jzheel: Apparently Facebook didn't notice news publishers suing Google for displaying headlines and 100-character excerpts while POINTING PEOPLE TO THE STORIES. https://twitter.com/...
Brooke Binkowski / @brooklynmarie: Scooping up money generated by journalism, squeezing out specific news orgs with algorithms, doling out small payouts to newsrooms that are just large enough to keep everyone scared of pissing them off, and now using AI to steal our shit? @Facebook is no friend to #1A! https://twitter.com/...

Austin Kocher, PhD / @ackocher: Let's get this straight: an intern inputs a topic sentence, GPT-3 uses artificial intelligence to write the news article, a Google algorithm prioritizes top articles, then a FB tool summarizes the article so no one has to read it. Ryan Robinson / @ryan_lr: Right. The solution to the problems of social media is definitely to make it less likely people will bother to read the articles they share. /s https://twitter.com/...
@rmac18: CTO Schroepfer commends the company's AI technology. He talks of a principle called “self-supervision” or a way for AI to train itself to detect hate speech and misinfo. Kevin Roose / @kevinroose: It's been less than a year since Facebook's AI accidentally translated Xi Jinping's name as “Mr. Shithole,” so I'm gonna take the under on this one ever shipping. https://twitter.com/...
Grace Clarke / @graceclarke: I'm not saying The Daily Mail or BI are better for it. And perhaps there's a correlation between this tactic, audience size, and quality of audience. But the bulleted list summaries work and I read them. I very much said what I said. https://twitter.com/...
@thesupermikey: There is a @reddit bot that does this on some high volume boards for specific news sites. It does a good enough job. I'm sure fb's bullshit will be marginally better. https://twitter.com/...
@vogon: developing a state-of-the-art AI summarization system (nb: “state-of-the-art” for text summarization right now is apparently about 30-40% word overlap with a reference summary) sounds both way cheaper and way more effective than the small team of human workers who used to do this https://twitter.com/...

@tinynewsco: Today we're proud to announce a new effort to make the path to journalism entrepreneurship easier: The Tiny News Collective, a new partnership between @NewsCatalyst and @LIONPubs https://tinynewsco.org/
Heather Bryant / News Catalyst: Introducing The Tiny News Collective
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: The challenge I was given was this: Can you build a complete news publishing stack for less than $100 a month? @jacqui and I got to work and found that yes, yes you can.
Mandy Jenkins / @mjenkins: I'm so excited about this announcement from @tinynewsco! I know how difficult it can be to start a new news site, this effort will make it more attainable in giving tangible support to founders where they need it most. https://medium.com/...
Lenfest Institute / @lenfestinst: . @NewsCatalyst and @LIONPubs today announced The Tiny News Collective, a new partnership providing the tools, resources and commonwealth of knowledge to help people build sustainable news organizations that reflect and serve their communities. https://medium.com/...
Jay Rosen / @jayrosen_nyu: “Our mission is to help bring equity into the news and information ecosystem by democratizing the process of starting sustainable local news businesses and supporting people who have been historically excluded from media and media ownership.” https://medium.com/...
Jacqui Lough / @jacqui: It feels so good to go public with what we've been working diligently on this year 🙌 https://twitter.com/...
Brian Boyer / @brianboyer: Just typed this into a Slack: “It's a starter kit for someone with a dream.” @tinynewsco https://medium.com/...
Jim Friedlich / @jimfriedlich: Welcome to the world TINY NEWS COLLECTIVE! Very pleased that @knightfdn and @lenfestinst are co-funding this important new platform for news start-ups. Delighted to partner with @pilhofer @acnatta @LIONPubs @ckrewson @TUKleincollege @NewsCatalyst @jroxann @LaSharah and more. https://twitter.com/...
Mathew Ingram / @mathewi: This is a great effort that I am happy to see come to fruition, and I wish them much success — well done, @pilhofer and @anikaanand00 and @HBCompass and the rest of the Tiny News team https://rsci.app.link/...
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: We'll support newsletters through @mailchimp. Local ads through @WhereByUs. Comments from @coralproject. A full fundraising/accounting suite from @MonkeyPod_io. Analytics configured based on @brianboyer's Memberkit. It's a platform focused on the *business* of local news.
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: We do so by relying on free/extremely cheap tools. Publishing works like this: Google Doc => GraphQL @webiny API => MongoDB <= GraphQL @webiny API <= Next.js static site. This costs next-to-nothing. That frees us up to pay a bit for some best-in-class business tools.
Tyler Fisher / @tylrfishr: Both @pilhofer and @thesmallpicture talked about the need for something like this, so we can have more @kensingtonvoice-likes in the world. And @LIONPubs has been leading the charge on training for local independent news. The partnership made too much sense, so we got to work.
@tinynewsco: We're working toward bringing the first founders on board in early 2021. We invite interested founders to sign up and if you know someone who you think would be an excellent fit, you can nominate them and we'll reach out to them with more information. https://tinynewsco.org/
@tinynewsco: Part classroom, part incubator, part platform, The Tiny News Collective is designed to give founders literally everything they need to launch and build a thriving local news business, including training, tools and access to resources like legal counsel.
@tinynewsco: The vast majority of news startups don't launch with deep-pocketed investors and splashy coverage in industry press. Most are launched by one or two founders passionate about news and information and motivated to serve their communities, but with no support and limited resources.
@pennyriordan1: Ten years ago the savior of hyperlocal journalism was Patch. In 2021 it may be the Tiny News Collective, with a few improvements: Shared tech stack but not cookie cutter, fiscal sponsorship, individual applications, and smart people in charge: https://medium.com/...
Megan Garvey / @garveymcvg: Very important starting point: “The Collective isn't trying to ‘save’ local journalism as we know it. We are empowering people to build something new and better: a true, ground-up ecosystem of diverse, locally focused newsrooms that are from and for local communities.” https://twitter.com/...
Stefanie Murray / @stefaniemurray: WOW ... ambitious, impressive and likely to make a very positive impact across the U.S.! https://twitter.com/...
Ashley Woods Branch / @ash_detroit: The road to becoming a journalist founder just got paved. And there are streetlights. This is a GAME-CHANGER in the fight to grow an independent local news ecosystem, to build civic convos at the town and city level, to rebuild trust between news and neighbors. You can do it! https://twitter.com/...
@newscatalyst: The Tiny News Collective is a game changer in breaking down the barriers to founding a local newsroom. We're proud to be doing this work in partnership with @LIONPubs and our wildly talented board and advisors. https://twitter.com/...
Jeff Jarvis / @jeffjarvis: Tiny News is big news. Congratulations to @pilhofer, @ckrewson, and teams and partners for making this happen. https://twitter.com/...
Heather Bryant / @hbcompass: Everything that @tylrfishr and @jacqui have built this year has just been amazing to watch as it came together. @tinynewsco solves the challenge that all news founders face in the beginning: picking the right technology. This team has built an incredible platform. https://twitter.com/...
LION Publishers / @lionpubs: “The biggest barrier to starting a newsroom is the cost. By reducing those costs, it will be easier for people underrepresented in the journalism industry to start their own newsroom.” https://twitter.com/...
Aron Pilhofer / @pilhofer: This is a project very near and dear to my heart. I could not be prouder to be part of the amazing group of people behind it. https://medium.com/... Wanna change local news for the better? Join us. Sign up here, and/or nominate someone. https://tinynewsco.org/
Heather Bryant / @hbcompass: This is the work that has been the meaningful bright spot in the bleakness of this year. The Tiny News Collective is real opportunity to change what ownership of media looks like and support people left out of traditional support systems in journalism. https://twitter.com/...

Mostafa Rachwani / @rachwani91: I find it strange people want to protest this. Perhaps they've never felt what it's like to be targeted by a police force abetted by their reporting. Or to have a crime squad named after your identity. Or to feel unsafe around cops. https://twitter.com/...
Fergus Hunter / @fergushunter: Agree with this. I question parts of the critique (and their application in Aus) but it's a valid contribution and journos should consider. What I find tedious is the reflexive, absurdly certain, hyperbolic views in support. The piece was deliberately provocative, which is good. https://twitter.com/...
Mark Jacob / @markjacob16: As someone who once ran a local news staff that wrote a lot about crime, I found this article thought-provoking. I'm proud of what we wrote about police accountability. Zaid Jilani / @zaidjilani: A lot of crime reporting is indeed really bad, clickbaity, sensationalist, etc. I think many people would like nothing more, however, than to see even less coverage of the violence too many poor people face on a daily basis, so they can ignore it. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Marisa Twigg / @marisatwigg: “That's b/c police give journalists info fast + cultivate relationships with reporters through ride-alongs and press conferences. Further evidence of how an online intelligentsia is detached from the very rational interests of the average person. 1/ https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Karen Sweeney / @karenlsweeney: It's important to understand Australian crime reporting (once a person is charged) is subject to strict contempt laws, which prevent us straying beyond allegations made by police. https://twitter.com/...
David Grossman / @davidgross_man: “What's worse is that journalists still defer to police, even though they know that some cops are liars.” https://twitter.com/...
Brandon Soderberg / @notrivia: This is really great. “Defund the crime beat” “Crime coverage is terrible. It's racist, classist, fear-based clickbait masking as journalism. It creates lasting harm for the communities that newsrooms are supposed to serve.” https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Laura Banks / @laurakatebanks: This is out of line. We often accept word of police but crime reporters fight for truth, give everything to shine light & give voice to vulnerable. Rich Greenfield / @richlightshed: Forgot periscope was still a seperate product https://twitter.com/...
Christina Warren / @film_girl: I'm sad to see @PeriscopeCo go. We used it (and Meerkat), so much during peak Mashable. Neha and I used to host a show on Mondays covering Sunday TV, which included Mad Men, GoT and the Kardashian's. @raywongy and I did a million impromptu streams together like total dorks
Kyle / @itskyleharris: Dang, you're really leaving us @PeriscopeCo 😭 Twitter and Periscope are the platforms that launched me. I was the first to live stream a wedding on the platform and I've since used it regularly to connect with people all over the world. Gonna miss it. ❤️ https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Sarah Evans / @prsarahevans: Bye bye bye Periscope (mobile). https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
@tspineapple: This app changed my life in many ways. I've grown so much through streaming on there. Sad, but change is for the good. I've met some of the most amazing people who will be a part of my life forever. Thanks for all the love. 💜 https://twitter.com/...
Rich Preston / @richpreston: Aww, sad news. Memories of so many fun #Periscope videos with @arishapiro traveling around the UK, giving the behind the scenes on stories about Brexit, elections, North Sea Cod, the Indyref, Irish same-sex marriage vote, and so many more! https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Brian Merchant / @bcmerchant: how is this post titled anything other than Periscope Down https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Bruce Falck / @boo: Huge respect, gratitude, and love for @kayvz and the whole team that brought @PeriscopeCo into the world ... https://twitter.com/...
Christina Warren / @film_girl: Fortunately for entertainment companies, Periscope piracy didn't eat into their bottom line, but it did portend the live-streaming future we've all come to expect as table stakes from our social apps. Every network can go live now. But five years ago, it was still special
Tate Morgan / @tatecmorgan: RIP the only platform I was every really “social media famous” on lmao. Hopefully it doesn't die as fast as my phone battery did while the app was in use. https://twitter.com/...
Jonathan JK Morris / @jonathanjk: March is the cut off, I'm surprised we can download our old videos - https://periscope.medium.com/ .... This is all their doing, the app could have been something else if they listened to the fans. It was Vine all over again. It there is a 3rd video option? Hmmm.
Geraint Davies / @geraintd: The last six years of Periscope have been an enormous amount of fun, first building the app with an incredibly smart team, and then watching it being used and enjoyed around the world. https://twitter.com/...
Noah / @magusnn: periscope was a major part of the last 4 years of my life. it will hold a special place in my heart forever. grateful to have been on the ride to the very end. https://twitter.com/...
Pablo Jablonski / @zbigy: Without a doubt, building Periscope has been the most fun and fulfilling job of my career; both because of the people I built it with, and the community who showed us their true selves through our platform. To everyone, it has been an honor. Excited for what we all do next! https://twitter.com/...
Jessica Verrilli / @jess: What an incredible ride ❤️🧡💛 💚💙. I led the acquisition of Periscope and even tho the app winding down feels like an ending, @kayvz & the team brought Twitter video to life and innovated immensely on the whole consumer product. Their impact is beyond even our ambitious visions. https://twitter.com/...
Kevin Weil / @kevinweil: RIP @PeriscopeCo. And congrats @kayvz and Joe on building an incredible product that showed the world what interactive live video could be. I'll never forget seeing it for the first time with you two, @jess, and @dickc. https://twitter.com/...
Sacha Judd / @szechuan: Periscope was a genuinely amazing way to participate in the joy of gigs and events you couldn't be at. Pouring one out for all the Harries who shared their concerts with us. https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Sean F Chan / @seanfchan: I have met some of the best people while working on Periscope! It will forever hold a special place in my heart. https://twitter.com/...
David Chen / @davechensky: Twitter is killing Periscope. This is very sad. I have met so many of you awesome folks on here through the app & our broadcasts. That said: live broadcasts on Twitter will still happen & of course I continue to invest in YouTube. But I'll miss this one https://rsci.app.link/...
Kayvon Beykpour / @kayvz: @kerrymflynn Right back at ya. Thank you
Martin Sfp Bryant / @martinsfp: It's official: Twitter is killing Periscope because it's been “in an unsustainable maintenance-mode state, and has been for a while.” https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Alex Kantrowitz / @kantrowitz: Called Twitter about this a few years ago, they could not have denied more forcefully. Now, Periscope is dead. https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
Alex Pettitt / @alexpettitt: Thanks for the memories ❤️ https://twitter.com/...
Dare Obasanjo / @carnage4life: Twitter shutting down Periscope has echoes of them shutting down Vine only for TikTok to basically fill that niche with 60 second instead of 6 second videos. Wonder if this opens up an opportunity for a standalone live streaming app for generation verzuz? https://periscope.medium.com/ ...
@kerrymflynn: Welp, the end of Periscope turned out to be true: https://periscope.medium.com/ ... I loved reporting on the app's community while I was at IBT and Mashable. Thanks for the memories :) https://www.ibtimes.com/... https://www.ibtimes.com/... https://www.ibtimes.com/... https://mashable.com/... https://twitter.com/...
